Spring Woodland Wildflower Hike

May 1, 2021 | 9:30 am to 11:00 am

One of the best places to observe truly spectacular flower displays is on the Devil’s Staircase trail (a part of the Ice Age Trail) that runs through Riverside Park.

On Saturday, May 1, you will be able to take a group hike and see entire hillsides covered with the blooms of Dutchman’s breeches, hepaticas, violets, spring beauty, wild ginger, and anemones. After an initial steep climb up a short staircase, the trail runs across slopes adjacent to the Rock River. Trail conditions are good and the hiking difficulty is moderate; a hiking stick is recommended for those who have balance issues. This hike is co-sponsored by the Friends of Riverside Park and the Rock County Conservationists.

There will be two hiking groups as a part of the event, the first leaving at 9:30 a.m. and returning at 11 a.m. The second group will leave at 11 a.m. and return at 12:30 p.m. Both groups will meet at the far north parking lot of Janesville’s Riverside Park near the shelter (Riverside Park North Pavilion) next to the Devil’s Staircase trail.

Space will be limited to 10 people per group and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. You must pre-register for this hike and are not able to just show up onsite unless you registered. We will have a waitlist available if spots are full. COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place including face masks required at check-in and when unable to maintain 6 feet distance from non-household members and physical distancing measures.

Please pre-register at the Recreation Division office or online by April 30 at 4:30 p.m.

This event is open to all ages and has no fee. If you signed up and are no longer able to attend or have COVID-19 symptoms, please call our office so we can offer your spot to someone else that is able to attend.

Contact the Recreation Division with any questions at (608) 755-3030.
